This August 7, it’s 40 years of successful career for Dr. Darlie Koshy. He joined Karnataka Handlooms on 7th August 1977.

With the Social Media getting strongly into the public media consumption, it was sheer confidence of a celebrity on his credibility to go online with his life experiences and experiments for the benefit of the new generation. Dr. Darlie Koshy’s online video series Fashion And Design (FAD) became very popular as students and practitioners of design learnt a lot from his view points. The first season of the series had 20 videos.

Dr. Darlie Koshy is a visionary educationist, transformative leader and persuasive administrator. He is well known for transforming several educational institutions like the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad leading the list where he served as Director for two terms of office from the turn of the century, the new millennium for nearly a decade (2000-2009). During this period which is well captured in the publication “50 years of NID (1961-2011)”, he had set up NID’s first time ever dedicated Post Graduate & R&D Campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru respectively. He pioneered IT linked Design Programmes with the introduction of a slew of Post Graduate Programmes including ‘Experiential Design’ programmes like Information Design, Retail Design apart from introducing for the first time in India, “Strategic Design Management”. He is the only Indian to have served the Executive Board of World Body of Design (ICSID) for 3 terms. Dr. Koshy is credited with the formulation of National Design Policy which was approved by Govt. Of India in Feb 2007 and also the widely known campaign “Designed in India, Made for the World” which powered India into Design Leadership position among developing economies of the world.

Over the last 7-8 years, Dr. Darlie Koshy has been heading as DG&CEO, ATDC & IAM under the aegis of AEPC while shaping a new skillscape of a ‘Skill Pyramid’ from ‘SMART’ at skill levels 1 to 4 and thereafter ATDC-AVI, for Skill Levels 5 to 7 and the higher levels at the Institute of Apparel Management playing a proactive role in the success of ISDS of MOT, GOI by setting up on Pan-India basis 200 ATDC-SMART Centres for training over 2,50,000 candidates in just under 5 years emerging as the ‘largest skill provider’ for the Apparel Sector.

Dr. Darlie Koshy is a PhD from IIT Delhi and rank holder in MBA from CUSAT having been also trained in FIT, Network as a founding faculty member of NIFT. Dr. Koshy, Author of 3 major books including the “Indian Design Edge” published by Roli Books is also an internationally acclaimed Presenter and powerful Orator. Above all, Dr. Koshy is well respected as a teacher and guide by hundreds of students and faculty members whom he has taught and mentored in NIFT, NID, IAM etc. over the last quarter of a century. Dr. Koshy has been named twice (2006, 2008) as one of 50 Leaders shaping Indian Higher Education. Dr. Koshy has served as Chairman of Curricula Committees set up by AICTE under HRD Ministry of GOI and NCVT/DGE&T under Ministry of Labour and Employment and currently serves as the Chairman of Mentor Council for Textile and Apparel Sectors constituted by the Ministry of Labour & Employment. Dr. Darlie Koshy also serves on the Advisory Board of Lakme Fashion Week and on the Boards of leading Corporates, Universities and Institutes.

Dr. Darlie Koshy belongs to Chengannur in Kerala. His father late Mr. T.O. Koshy and mother late Mrs. Leelamma Koshy wanted their son to do well in life. Mr. T.O. Koshy was Law Officer of Commercial Taxes with the State Government.

Dr. Darlie Koshy stays in Gurgaon in NCR with his wife Roshni and daughter Alika. His son Arun Koshy is based in the USA.

When asked about his future plans he smiled. “I really want to pursue my passion in writing. Writing fiction. That too in Malayalam. Just planning something. Hopefully, by 2020 you can expect a book from me!”

Dr. Darlie Koshy has been invited to speak on Education for Handloom Sector at Guwahati as part of National Handloom Day on 7th August 2017. “Which is a strange coincidence indeed... I started with Handlooms on 7th August and speaking on Handlooms 40 years later on National Handloom day...”, he said.
